Chikwawa scales up nutrition practices

Chikwawa District Council has intensified good nutrition practices among breastfeeding mothers, under-five children and pregnant women.

The interventions include teaching communities how to prepare nutritious meals using locally available resources, establishing backyard gardens, growing diversified food crops and eating six food groups.

On Wednesday, the council held a community-driven nutrition exhibition in Traditional Authority Mlilima in the district.

During the food demonstrations, nutrition volunteers showcased different nutritious foodstuffs and how to prepare nutritious food using local resources.

In his remarks, Chikwawa District Council nutrition officer Charles Muyanika said they have been training communities to prepare nutritious meals.

He said: “The training sessions have been effective as communities are now well-informed about the six food groups.

“Those who have undergone training now understand how to prepare meals incorporating six food groups.”

Muyanika said the interventions have reduced malnutrition cases in the district to six in every 100 children.

He also attributed the success to the partnership with non-governmental organisations supporting nutrition-related projects in the district.
